The education system in India unfortunately carries almost the same flavor as it was decades ago. Earlier the structure was built to produce clerks, civil servants, and other government officers, today the market is experiencing a storm of people with B.Tech and MBBS degrees. Engineers and doctors in bulk have created an imbalance in the job market, resulting in plenty of jobless graduates in India.
Unaware of career domains
Based on the 2019 survey conducted by Mindler, an online career-counselling
platform, 93% of Indian students and graduates are just aware of the
seven most prominent career paths.
Although there are more than 250 career options to opt for, students
still stick to the most chosen ones. Students from different age groups
participated in this survey. The list of career options they mentioned
includes – engineering, medicine, law, IT, management, accounts,
and design. Unfortunately, more than 40 domains are available in the
market that offers 5000 job options to job seekers. The unawareness
of career domains is one of the biggest reasons behind the candidates
being jobless
.
Reasons to explore
Digging deep, there are plenty of reasons that have led candidates to
choose the wrong career option and get diverted from their prospective
job opportunities. The fear of failure in examinations has also contributed
a lot to unemployment in India.
Failed education system
As we mentioned earlier, our Indian education system has not experienced
any significant change since its foundation. The system speaks about
studying long hours and focusing less on extra-curricular activities.
This has restricted students from enhancing their skillsets and thinking
something out of the box. Mental pressure and stress have become quite
common among students, especially teenagers. Thanks to the competition
level that has added a level more to the stress, giving less time for
socialization. Obviously, such practices confined the students among
the four walls, making them unaware of the opportunities all around.
Pressure from parents
Parents have a huge contribution to turning their children into victims.
They pressurize the students to pursue higher ranks and great marks
and make them feel like there is no career for those who come second
in class. Comparing the performance report with other students increases
their anxiety level which in turn creates a bad impact on social and
academic success. Many parents have a tendency to cut off the cable
and internet connection in order to make their children stay more focused
on studies. This is definitely not a solution to earn better grades,
instead creates trauma and a fear of failure in their mind.
Mental harassment from peers
Mental harassment from friends, teachers, and relatives, is pretty common
when you are scoring less or choosing the wrong streams. For example,
students choosing Arts over Science is always been judged, as Arts is
considered as an inferior subject than Science or Commerce. Such harassment
often makes the students feel low, resulting in choosing the wrong career
option in the end. Turning the passion into a career and later on into
a profession has always restricted the students from trying out different
career scopes.
The fear of failure, mental torture, and traumatized education system
has blocked the roads, giving rise to the competition level. The higher
the competition, the lower is the opportunities. No doubt, this is another
side of the coin that often remains unexplored when it comes to unemployment
in India.
Need for career counselling
This might be shocking but the truth is many Indian students are still
unaware of the importance of career counselling. In fact, India has
a very limited number of career counsellors who can actually guide young
minds in taking the right career decision. This brings the students
and graduates under one roof, leading to a struggling career ahead.
Parents should understand that scoring 90% marks is not enough to pursue
a good career and get a satisfying job. The students need to understand
their capability, learn about their interests, and accordingly opt for
a career that offers multiple professional grounds. Career counselling
can certainly help the students or the graduates to choose a proper
career option.
Need for online or offline coaching
As per the Census 2011, India’s literacy rate is 72.98%, which
shows the rapid growth in the learning and development process. However,
the unemployment rate of 7.11% in 2020 made people confused regarding
the job market.
Competition is definitely a factor that has deprived degree-holders
of attaining their desired profession. But it can be overcome with proper
coaching either online or offline. E-learning is gaining pace over the
past few years. Online education in India has set a new dimension since
2016. However, with the pandemic outbreak, the educators offering classes
for SSC, IAS, CTET, NET, exams are in more demand. Be it the classes
for 10 and 12 standards students or SSC
Coaching in Delhi , Pune, Kochi, etc., students have understood
the need for online coaching. As a consequence, the online education
market has witnessed 9.6 million users in 2021. Indeed, a great figure
to calculate.
Though the graph seems to be satisfying, a majority of people are still
in a dilemma. This again adds up as a factor behind the struggling story
of the Indian graduates.
